My husband is My Lai (father was American) and what you describe as you former in-laws is exactly what I experience with mine. A very strange combination of both worlds indeed. I went to Vietnam this summer with my mother-in-law and it was culture shock to the nth power. I did realize that so many things I saw my husband's family do in America that I didn't understand, now makes so much sense.
