Recap, Day One

I am sure you are all waiting with baited breath for my very next dental update! I couldn’t possibly make you hold out a minute longer!

So Noah had his appointment today and of the six cavities, our dentist only wants to fill one and thinks if we take good care of his teeth that he may never need to get the rest filled. YAY! This is great news. Particularly because the cavity he did need to get filled was actually UNDER a previous filling which meant it was HARD to get to. Noah did not do so well. He hated the dental dam that they needed to use to get back to his molar but he wasn’t clear about that so they ended up giving him Novocaine (thinking he was upset about the pain from the drilling - turns out probably that wasn’t the case). That didn’t really help since he still needed the dental dam. They got the filling done but then the Novocaine started wearing off in the car on the way home and he was SO uncomfortable, he just sobbed. Dalton has this same reaction to Novocaine which is why we usually prefer to go without unless the problem involves the root. I hate to make a lesson out of it but hopefully it will serve as a good point of reference next time Noah needs work done and is given the option to take the Novocaine or skip it. You can’t REALLY choose unless you know what you are choosing from. So now he knows. My poor baby boy.

Addison had her two little teeth checked out too and all looks good on that end, so far. Someone commented that weak enamel is related to poor prenatal nutrition. I was one of those people who threw up from day 1 until the day of birth and my prenatal nutrition was horrible, despite my attempts otherwise. I would not be at all surprised if Noah’s issues were formed in utero and it is also why I assume Addison, too, will likely have issues. It will be a happy surprise if she doesn’t.

No extraction today, the abscess looks a little better so they want to leave his tooth alone to fall out on its own for now unless things change. Yay for him, boo for me. And thus ends another round of dental drama.

Tomorrow Addison has her surgery consultation. I’m going alone. I hope I remember to ask all the pertinent questions.

And then Thursday morning hubby has a spot on the local Morning Show. This is a big deal for him. He’ll be on promoting his book and talking about Computer Security for home users and those who don’t get techno-geeky things. I’m proud of him. What he REALLY wants is to be on the Daily Show but you have to start somewhere :-)

Dental stuff is such a pain… I’m glad he only needed one filling but sorry it was such a difficult one to do. Hope the rest of them don’t ever have to be filled!

I’m de-lurking (LOVE your blog) to tell you that actually weak enamel can be a genetic thing too. My little brother and I both had weak enamel… the dentist said that it’s sometimes an actual “syndrome” that can be hereditary. My two older brothers did not have the same problem. Thankfully the dentist also said that it often resolves once permanent teeth grow in….. this was definitely the case for my brother and I. We both had cavities all the time as kids, no matter how well we took care of our teeth…. ever since I lost my baby teeth, NO MORE cavities! YAY!

I also learned about this hereditary trait in 9th grade biology! I remember thinking “That’s it… that’s what was wrong with us!” I hope Noah has the same positive change with permanent teeth.

Anyway, Addison is precious. I’ve had a heart for adoption since a VERY young age, so I can’t wait to go through this process myself someday. I found your blog a while ago through someone else’s, though I’ll never remember whose. I’ve enjoyed following your journey.
