16 Months

Today’s the day! My baby is 16 months old! For those really bad at math, that’s just two months shy of 1.5!!!
Reading with Dad
Highlights:

  • 21 lbs, 31″ size 4.5/20 shoe, size 6-12 month bottoms, 12/18 month top/dress
  • still only 6 teeth (4 on top, two on bottom), no new ones in sight
  • She is still rear-facing in her car seat but this week she is finally switching over to a rear-facing convertible seat from her infant bucket seat because her infant seat only goes to 32 inches. She’ll stay rear-facing for at least another year in her new seat.
  • Has a total temper and will scream until she gets what she wants.
  • Says “Ow” when she gets hurt and will tell whole “stories” about her injuries through gestures. Always wants kisses on the “ow”.
  • Can match up her little shape pegs into their matching shape holes in her Automoblox and take the car apart and put together herself most of the time.
  • Loves to kick anything round, like a soccer ball.
  • Loves to do front rolls (with help) and log rolls (without help)
  • Can not hang on ANYTHING - bars, rings, etc.
  • Does this weird thing when she points where her ring and pinky fingers are crossed.
  • Tries to go up and down stairs by walking. Eek.
  • Totally digs gymnastics although she hates to wait her turn. She’s one of the only kids in her class who actually wants a turn and runs up when her name is called. She loves the trampoline most of all.
  • Loves to draw. on paper, her hands, my arms, anything! She loves face paint and nail polish too. She holds her pencil correctly and is right-handed.
  • So Big

  • Loves to walk backward, twirl around, chase, walk on her heels or toes, do the splits, still trying to learn to jump with two feet
  • Eats at the table without a highchair or booster anymore and sometimes uses a cup with no lid or straw. Retrieves a cup when she is thirsty and brings it to us to fill.
  • Outgoing and not so shy. She’ll run and play around other kids but still does the “long hard stare” to see how other kids are acting and what they are doing. She fluctuates back and forth between being oblivious and in her own world and being totally amazed at other kids.
  • She’ll go to other adults now without issue. I’m sure she’d stay with a sitter just fine now if we had one. But she still prefers us and loves to walk around holding onto my finger.
  • Learning new words, tend to be very emphatic action words and repeated 100 times in a row with urgency until someone (including the cats and dogs) complies: sit (”zit”) and open and some other word that means “garbage”. Yesterday she said the word “one” when she wanted me to count something for her.  Lots more “Vietnamese babble”. She calls her diaper a “butt-butt”.
  • She also is finally spontaneously using the sign for Daddy when she sees his picture, for example, along with saying “dada”. She is interested in learning new signs but doesn’t often do them spontaneously.
  • She follows most commands and understands most things. What she doesn’t understand, she THINKS she understands and tries to do what she thinks you want her to do.
  • Look at my skillz

  • She is FINALLY letting me put her hair up about 65% of the time. I think this is helped by the fact that it is FINALLY long enough to get in her eyes.
  • She hates being read to in a huge way but loves books and loves reading them to herself. She frequently points to words on pages and wants to know what they say.
  • She is still waking at night a few times and still takes a bottle at bedtime and a few times in the night. Daddy still does all night feedings.
  • This month she had a rough cold but knows how to blow her nose well so that helped a TON.
  • When she wants to do something or the answer is yes, she does this adorable hyperventilation thing where she nods vigorously and pants!
  • She learned “what does a snake say” and loves to find snakes in their cages.
  • She knows the following body parts: belly button, tummy, feet, toes, hands, thumb (of course), eyes, nosey (which she calls “beep” haha), teeth, mouth, hair, head. She isn’t a fan of pointing to stuff on command but she will follow directions like “put your hands down on the ground” or “What’s in your mouth?”.

So that’s a lot of stuff! Some isn’t necessarily new but I’m trying to get it all down so I have something to look back on. It is amazing to me how her personality is blossoming. She is sooooo strong-willed about some things and so easy about others. By next month she should be in her own room and maybe - just maybe - sleeping through the night!

She is just an awesome kid Nicki! I love the enthusiasm when she’s going to say “yes,” like you showed us in that video of her signing with her book.

She’s grown so much, and she is SO SMART! She looks so healthy but I’m sure will always be on the petite side. Do you by any chance know how big she was when she was born? We are looking at our referral information!! And where curious about a couple of things listed- it says she weighed 2 pounds 10 oz at birth that’s a little scary!
Let me know! I may have some other questions for you too since you’ve been there done that!
      Thanks!

Oh, sniff, she’s getting all grown up. She seems so well adjusted and even a little further along on the development track than some kids her age. Good job mamma!

I can’t believe how big she is, I remember reading your blog back when it was purple and you were waiting for your referral…..Ahhh, yes…
Too cute, and I love how you so know her personality.

      Nicki,
She is growing up! I love reading about all she can do. You are so observant. The story about the tiniest pony was hysterical. Those are the memories worth perserving. The pic of Addison in the waste basket is priceless. We’ve had a few of those learning lessons lately, too. I just have to say this: You are such a good mamma. Seriously, you’re someone I look up to. Keep up the good work. It’s the most important job ever.

    12. Michelle Says:

She’s such a big girl! Love these updates Nicki! Miss you all :)

    13. Rachel Says:

She is so beautiful and getting SO BIG! I love the detailed progress reports you write. It’s so much fun for us who are reading, but it will be so terrific for you (& Addison!) to read in the days and years ahead. You’re such a neat mommy. :D
