Touring Addy’s Nursery

Three nights ago Addy spent her first night in her own room. It was also the first time in recent history that I recall being alone in my bedroom with my husband and NO KIDS! I wish I could say I slept soundly but of course I didn’t. I was glued to the monitor all night and woke up exhausted. And I’m not even the Nighttime Parent!!! It is getting easier every night, though.

She did just fine with the transition. She is still falling asleep and staying asleep exactly the same - waking up no more or less than usual. Although I think the sleep she’s getting is more sound and she is sleeping in a lot later in the morning.

All of this means, of course, that I (more or less) finally finished her nursery. We made major progress over Labor Day and scored her new furniture on Craigslist, to boot.  It is really simple looking and minimalistic and spacious which is exactly what I was going for. I really wanted it to have a Buddhist feel, an oasis in our house that any of us can go to wind down and relax. And it turned out better than I had hoped for - it really has such a peaceful vibe. I honestly spend a lot of time there, myself, so maybe it is more my space than her’s for now. But that’s ok. I just love it. And its the only place in our entire house that feels like home to me, so far.

When we moved her crib in, we took the opportunity to set it to its lowest setting which makes me sort of sad. Next step is moving to a big girl bed. Sigh. But I still refuse to take out her bumper pads - so there!

And my favorite place in her room:

Nursery

That is where we give Addy her bottles and rock her to sleep. It will soon have a new rocking chair because this Ikea chair just doesn’t cut it (or match). But it works for now. Addy loves to look at her silk lanterns overhead and listen to her music box, and so do I! That’s her favorite fat Buddha that she kisses and feeds, like a dolly, on her side table. And the picture on her dresser is a hand-painted picture of Buddhist monks that we found at the Asian Festival this year.

We totally fell in love with her dresser, even though it has glass drawer-fronts and WHO has glass drawer-fronts for a baby’s room?!? We just love it, we both agree (a minor miracle in and of itself) and had picked it out when we found the same one on Craigslist. SCORE! There is a matching armoire waiting for us at Babies R Us but there is more than enough room for her stuff in the dresser, alone.

And hence you might not even recognize that my baby girl might live here, I made Addy this bow holder which hangs inside her closet:

Addy's Bows

Last but not least - I need advice. Here is what we have up over Addy’s crib:

Above the crib

The words are an homage to Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist meditation and spirituality in general. I really wanted to put Addy’s tiny Non La that we bought her in Vietnam up somewhere and it ended up here. But I have a vision of replacing the Non La with three black&white pictures of Addy’s brothers that I find particularly beautiful and peace-inspiring. What do you think? Keep the Non La? Use the pictures instead? Or put the pictures over the words and keep the Non La too? You can get an idea of relative size of the words/hat by looking at the crib pics above.

Thanks for the advice in advance! I know its a silly thing but sometimes I get to blog about the silly small trivial stuff too, right?

Beautiful beautiful. I’d put up all three — the quote, the hat, and the boys. Now sweet to think of her falling asleep and seeing her big brothers watching over her.

It looks great! I would definitely keep the Non La and put the pictures on top. I love the look of the hat hanging on the wall.

I’m one of those mommies that would have the monitor tied to my ear all night long, jumping at the smallest sound. :) Glad to hear her transition to her own bedroom is going well. For the wall, I don’t know - could you add a fourth picture maybe of Addy or you and her daddy so that there’s two on each side of the hat? Any which way, I think it’ll be nice to have the pictures of her brothers up. I love having family pictures all over the place. It makes it feel like a loving home.

I LOVE the room - it looks awesome! The willow is incredible and the lanterns look great. I’d vote to keep the hat and add the pictures too! I like Melinda’s idea of 2 pics on each side of the hat to balance it. Or maybe put the hat above the words and the pictures below?

I may be in the minority here…but forgo the pictures. A girls needs a place of her own to go to get away from sib’s. Even though my three girls all get along, they are not to go into each others rooms unless invited. This is their space and these are their things to be respected. Hey wait… maybe this is why the get along so well. They can each retreat to thier own spaces.

      Otherwise the room looks awesome!

P.S. Can I get a bow holder too? My Sophia is the bow queen!

I like the Non La. Can you put the pictures beneath the Non La? (I cannot tell how high up it is on the wall.

      The nursery looks great!

IMO, we should leave it as is, or put the pictures above the words. I like the sort of ‘minimalistic’ look of the words and the non la the way they are. I think it fits the clean, bare essentials look of the room. But, if we do put up the pictures, my opinion is to try them above the writing. Just my $.07

I think the pictures would look great over the words. Just make sure you have an extra special picture…of Sticky :-P just kidding. Everyone knows that Sticky is her favorite. :D

I love the dresser with the glass drawer fronts! I’ve been looking for something like that for a long time. Where did you see it, other than craigslist?
