Dear Bloggers in Colder Climates,

Since you all are well aware that the Blogosphere, along with the rest of the Internets, revolve around me I would like to formally request insist that you stop talking about how COLD you are ok? It is September so unless it is snowing and you are stuck outside shoveling, stop yer whining!

By the way, here is a picture from October 2006 back in Michigan before we left to get Addison in hot hot Hanoi:

October 2006 - Snow!

I’ve been here in Texas for just over six months now. I made it through my first summer. Well, apparently not yet, but almost. I made it through August, at least. And really I did just fine. When you are the New Guy in town, people frequently ask if you are doing ok in August. Like many times a week. The thing is, the humidity isn’t any worse than Michigan and the heat is nice. I like the heat. We still get to go to the beach, to swim in our pool, to wear almost nothing in an attempt to keep cool.

But come September, when summer turns to Autumn officially, I’m done with the heat. And by heat I mean anything over 90 degrees, ok? I want to be “chilly” at night and I want to wear pants and long sleeves. I want to put my baby in some of these awesome fall clothes I’ve been buying like a maniac. And I want to stop reading with extreme levels of envy when other people complain about their cold nights, fireplaces and fall jackets.

Also I miss apple orchards in a big way. This is apple cider season back in Michigan. I don’t think apple trees grow in Texas. If they do, surely the season has ended months ago. I miss cider donuts. I miss going to the farm and remembering to bring gloves because it might be cold. I miss hot chocolate at soccer practice. I miss changing leaves and amazing photography opportunities. Most of all, I miss photography opportunities.

October 2004 - Fall LeavesI’m in serious withdrawal in the photography department. But I’m sick of taking my kids outside and forcing them to play in the heat so I can take a few pictures of them all sweaty and beet red. And I’m thinking taking pictures of horror-movie arachnids aren’t quite inspirational to me or anyone else.

I know this feeling will pass. The beauty of Houston is that we get fall all winter long instead of the few short weeks we enjoyed autumn in Michigan. Our leaves turn and fall….later. Our days get cool and our nights get chilly …..later. We have a fireplace. We’ll get to use it….later. And longer. A lot longer. So good things come to those who wait, I guess.

Meanwhile, blogosphere, stop rubbing it in my face ok?! It’s my first year in Texas.

Meanwhile the temps are dropping to the low 70’s at some point in the night and I’m tempted to become a vampire just to enjoy some of the cool weather a bit. No good photography opportunities there but I can pretend it’s autumn weather right?

I just have to figure out what to do about the apple cider donuts missing from my life.

I came to check out your spider and read this post! Where in Michigan are you from? I’m originally from Michigan too but now live in New England!! :) I give you credit – Texas is NOT a place I’d want to be in the midst of summer!!!

Ha ha…are you referring to my bragging that it was in the low 80’s the other day?? If it makes you feel better…it is 90 again today LOL
Our nextdoor neighbors are from Houston and they complained that August was too hot here this year LOL

YAY for surviving the summer LOL. It’s bloody hot. But like you said…it goes away and you are going to love every lickin second :-) Remember we (at least in Austin) were iced in for 5 days straight last year and it snowed :-) I miss fall in MI too but I got over it because I just thought, “it’s nice but it only lasts a few minutes” LOL. Fall in MI is minutes but winter here is LONG and gorgeous.
I’m done with heat too. It has been cooling off here. I have been sitting outside on the patio reading books and stuff. The nights have been real nice too.
I am going to look around but I am pretty sure there are orchards around here somewhere. I swear I read about them. Let me get back to ya!

I guess I shouldn’t mention that Blake’s Apple Orchard is now, like, right around the corner from us? *ducking*

You can always come stay with us for a while! :)

You won’t be missing much when we’re all scooping ourselves out from under 5 feet of snow! :)

I lived in FL for a year, and so I understand missing the changing seasons…especially autumn since it’s my favorite. But the winter was WONDERFUL, and I imagine TX winters are also gorgeous!

Ahh…Texas fall and winter. Just think! Kiddos can wear skimpy Halloween suits and you can BBQ your holiday turkeys.

Still–Houston weather SUCKS. You guys should move further west where the mosquitoes are smaller and the air is drier. It feels MUCH cooler–I swear :) You guys do have much more cultural riches…but we have excellent margaritas in El Paso.

It was like 48 degrees when we left for school this morning, and right now it’s like… 87. We also had gym outside today. And you’re complaining about the heat! :P

Oh you cruel woman reminding me of apple cider donuts. I have been in FL for ten years and still miss the fall.
