Halloween

We love Halloween. I’ve always loved it but I really REALLY love it now that I have kids. I went into labor with my very first child on Halloween while walking around a local mall watching the kids trick-or-treat. I’ll never forget that yearning feeling - watching every other parent with their adorable and happy children and knowing that soon that would be my life. From that point on, I have really truly treasured Halloween.

Last year we missed Halloween becuase we were in Vietnam adopting Addison, truly an ok trade-off!! But we didn’t even decorate, mostly becuase I was extremely depressed and stressed and just getting out of bed in the morning was a chore. Decorations were NOT happening. So this year I’ve really looked forward to being able to go all-out.

I had hoped to break out the decorations on the first day of Autumn but that totally didn’t happen. It is a LOT more difficult to get into the harvest-festival mood down here in Texas where it is still 1 bajillion oppressive degrees outside daily. Today I heard an announcement that everyone ought to buy up their pumpkins NOW because there is a huge pumpkin shortage this season and if you don’t get ‘em while they’re hot, they’ll be gone. Well I’m sorry but there is no way short of freezing that a pumpkin bought right now and kept on a typical porch in Texas would last more than a week, much less all the way through Halloween! What a joke!

So we are trying to get in the mood. Tony ordered us apple cider donuts and cider shipped directly from our favorite orchard in Michigan :-) They should get here this week. Tomorrow the decorations come down and the decorating begins. I’ve been slowly putting Addison’s costume together, bit by bit.

Tell me what you do for Halloween? Do you decorate? A little or a lot? When do you start decorating? Do you have a Halloween party of any kind? Do you plan to “boo” anyone? Do you dress up or just your kids? I wanna hear all about it, either in the comments or in your own blog. I need all the inspiration I can muster!

I love Halloween. I’ve already boo’d!! I’m on the Halloween committee at work and help throw that big party. When my children are older I hope to throw one for them every year too. Decorating and getting ready for Halloween always starts October 1st for me. I had a couple of entries on my blog a few days ago and last week on it. Have fun with your decorating!!

We are thinking of having a costume party this year. Everyone comes over to trick or treat with the kids. Decor…I have a few things but nothing extravagant. I like to decorate “fall” rather than “Halloween” :-)

Oooooo I love Halloween. Annslee loved all the decorations last year (even went through the haunted house at Boo at the Zoo) but this year she is scared of everything : ( Anyway, looking forward to trick or treating with my little Tinkerbell!

Halloween is such a mixed thing in our house now. We’ve always done the traditional carmel apples (my favorite fall treat) as well as cider, donuts, a bonfire with friends, hayride, etc. Now that we are eating different we aren’t sure what to make of it. The girls decided that going trick or treat would be no fun if you can’t eat all the candy..so at their prompting we are going to Chuck E Cheese’s (I’ve spent 28 years avoiding the place, but now am left with no safe way out) for salads and fun insteat of trick or treating. We’ll still do the bonfire, real cider from the Amish, maybe donuts if I can find the right recipe, and of course a hay ride screaming songs until we are horse from the cool autumn air.
I keep thinking I’ll decorate some if I can get the house clean…maybe it’ll happen in time for the Christmas tree???

We’ve never been too big a Halloweeners. Ya know…just the ordinary: dress up as a uterus or some such nonsense, get trashed, lose the uterus in a pool of beer at the end of the night. That sorta thing. But THIS year? THIS year’s gonna be special! I’m so excited I have a cutie to dress up. I think we’re going to do 12 Days of Halloween, so he can wear every costume I’ve thought up for him…or maybe not 12, but some variation of that.

I also love to decorate for Halloween and Fall. I can’t wait to get started. We did go to the pumpkin patch we found a lot of very small and many green pumpkins. The pumpkins didn’t do well in TN. We didn’t have enough rain. I love to let my little girl dress up and we live in the most popular sub division for trick or treating. Last year we had over 700 kids. It is a real blast…. I am also adopting from Vietnam check out my blog

We’re decorating this weekend! I usually have a kids party but this is the first year I’m not going to because I don’t have the energy to put it together and we’d end up with too many people if both girls invite friends. The school is having a big carnival so that will be our party instead. It’s A.’s first Halloween and I’m afraid she’s going to be terrified on Halloween night. She’s excited about dressing up but very scared of the ugly costumes and ghost & skeleton decorations she’s seen in the stores. So we’ll probably stick with pumpkin and black cat decorations and save our scarier ones for next year. M. is going to be Cleopatra and A. is going to be an old fashioned girl with frilly dress and parasol…she wanted to be princess but I guess some kids at school said that was too babyish for a 5th grader..sad. She needs to have a chance to wear something pretty and frilly so we just picked out a dress she liked and invented something that she could be while wearing it. She’s excited about the candy but I predict that we’re not going to last very long trick-or-treating this year when she sees the decorations!

We decorate, though not much. This year I’m decorating more since someone just had to have a Harry Potter birthday party. We usually “boo” people as well. As far as the pumpkin thing goes, check out your local craft store for those fake pumpkins you can actually carve. I know it’s not the same as the real thing, but they look pretty realistic and they won’t rot on your front porch.

      mmmm…donuts.

I’m crabby this year. I wish that I had a kiddo to buy a costume for. However…this may be my last year to get all tarted up and do the grown up Halloween!

You should get us a plane down there. Maybe we’ll bring Michigan with us again. ;)
