Various Totally Unrelated Thoughts
Well I have no photo today. I didn’t even take my camera out. I blame the busy day. I was gone all day taking the kids to science classes and gymnastics. I’m in desperate need for some photographic inspiration. Throw ‘em at me!
I don’t want to write about Adoption Ethics today. I don’t want to reflect on the bajillion ways my baby girl is not a baby anymore. I don’t want to talk about shopping. I know, right? What’s left?! Haha.
Every day I go into my Wordpress admin and there are countless spam comments waiting for me to ditch. I have to go through them all becuase for every 200 I throw out, I find 1 or 2 legitimate comments that somehow made their way to the wrong box. Not unlike email.
But seriously how do I end up with like 100 spam comments a DAY?!!? My two favorite from today:
Sorry, it just sounds like a crazy idea for me
and….
Nice post.
I am sure you will surf on our page..
Thank You
Next up: Blogger, I love you again! Not enough to go back, but all the same? I love you. I love you for creating the new option for me to get all comments via email. LONG overdue. For those of you who use your own hosted wordpress PLEASE install the comments-by-email add on. There are some posts whose comments I badly want to follow but don’t remember to on my own.
Search Terms: I’m not really big into stats. If I have 1 reader, I’m happy. I don’t need to quantify. But occasionally I log into my stats just to see the things people search for that wind them up here. Some of my favorites:
- “ride on cooler” (I thought my kid was the only one obscure enough to even imagine such a thing much less google it!)
- “Fat Noah” (My kid can’t even keep his pants up, he’s so skinny…move on!)
- “broken heart” (literally? Or figuratively? I wonder…but I get TONS of hits for this search term, maybe appropriately so?)
- “very fat kids” (ok already! No more candy for us!)
- “my toddler is obsessed with her toes” (is this a problem worth googling?)
And my all time favorite:
- “picture of poop floating in toilet” - while it is true that I will photograph almost anything, even I have my limits. I have NEVER taken a picture of such things. Move along!
So there we have it - the ins and outs of my stats. Aren’t you glad you stuck around to read?!

I found your website off of the RQ website, and have enjoyed reading it. We also live in Houston and homeschool. We just returned in Sept. from China with our daughter. Your life sounds remarkably similar to mine. Maybe we’ll see you around town at some of the homeschooling events.

Matt and I both are totally grossed out when I log-in to my stats only to find that I have 10 hits in a day because of the search term “pooped pants pics.” And that’s EVERYDAY! So much so that I’ve been tempted to go through my blog and take out the word “poop” all together. EEWWW!

Haha! The things people will search for! I recently checked my stats and learned that someone found me by googling “tighty whities boy picture” Not sure what they were looking for, but I’m pretty sure they didn’t find it on my blog!

Completely unrelated to the theme of the post, but I was curious about your thoughts on the Wordsmith program? I have been considering that for my children and that is why I ask. Thanks

Nicki, you know I switched from Nucleus to WordPress recently, and I’m not terribly impressed. I promised myself I’d give it enough time though…
Have heard/read Textpattern is better at filtering out SPAM comments. I may try that next. I would never personally go with blogger - I like control.
BTW, I would install “comments-by-email add on” but no one ever comments on my blog although I know I have readers. At least according to Feedburner and Google Analytics.

I have a little stats plugin thing that connects my blog to wordpress.com and lets me analyze my stats that way. I don’t know how it works with other blogs like Blogger.

I have wordpress. Is it just the fact that my blog is private? Can you not get spam comments on a private blog? :-/
