New Years Plans: The Fun Never Ends!
How is possible that tomorrow marks the last day of 2007? This, to me, is mind boggling.
By now you may have realized I’m somewhat of a lush for all things ritual and tradition. New Years Eve is no exception. Not exactly the “babysitter” type or the “go to sleep before midnight” type, we sort of carved out our own traditions over the years and we have a lot of fun.
My friend J~ passed along this great tradition where each member of the family picks out some otherwise forbidden food. Its always fun to see what the kids come up with. There’s always some junky sugary cereal on the list or some junky Little Debbie snack. But Teegan’s always our wild card. Last year his ‘thing’ was beef jerky. This year it’s mussels with black bean sauce. Man we deprive our kids, huh?
So we snack on this stuff but that’s not really “dinner”. We also do fondue - meat and cheese and later on, chocolate. Usually we have lava cakes too, right around midnight, hot out of the oven. Tony is a superb chef.
When I can find them, I buy those junky tubes filled with junky toys that you pull apart and they explode. Know what I’m talking about? My kids love them, though I’m not sure why. Probably just the surprise factor. We aren’t really into pyrotechnics so this is as crazay as we get.
At midnight we watch the ball drop and toast with something yummy. The kids get sparking juice, I think this year we’ll toast with White Russians. I have NO clue what one does when they live in the central timezone. My kids have suggested DVR’ing the ball drop and replaying it for OUR midnight. Hell if I know!
We are starting a few new traditions this year as well. Stolen from Wondertime, we’ll each make a prediction for 2008, write it down and stash it away for next year. Stolen from my best friend D~, we’ll also do a little “what we are like” synopsis that will be fun to revisit next year to see how much we have all changed.
On New Years Day we traditionally do nothing and just wait for everyone to go back to work. Pretty Lame. Again stolen from Wondertime, this year we’re going to do three new things on New Years Day: watch a new family movie together, try a new restaurant together and play a new game.
Do you have any fun New Years traditions?

Ok, so L chose her traditional ‘ol Pizza Rolls, K chose Fritos and T chose Cereal Straws. Ewwww, cereal straws?!!! We have tons of traditions for NYE but nothing for New Year’s Day, maybe we’ll do the Wondertime thing too.
Happy New Year!

The ball still drops at midnight in the central time zone (or at least it used to) it is just pre-recorded. So they have had time to edit things out, but I have not watched the ball drop in at least five years, not since law school so you should probably get info from someone who has seen it in the last five years! Enjoy your new years celebration!

Whats wrong with Beef jerky & mussels?!?!?

can my dh come for the mussels? He loves them! Dh usually works–we toast with champagne, I guess we need some traditions for the kids. On NYDay we have lentil/sausage soup from Barefoot Contessa for good luck–sausage b/c it is round, lentils sort of like the black eyed pea thing. Thats it–I need to do better!

That sounds like a great evening! For the past few years Hubs and I have been staying in and making a seafood dinner. This year it is Crab Leg appetizers and Shrimp Scampi! I can’t wait for next year, certainly we’ll be adding some kid friendly things to the menu!
