Wonderful, post Nicki. It reinforced many of the things I remind myself of daily. I liked what you mentioned about regression too. How true that regression can help strengthen the bonds of attachment.

Great stuff. I completely agree that attachment is a loooong journey, and during the journey change is constant...for better or worse. I cringe when I read people's blogs and they happily announce how attached their child is after just a few days or weeks (or even hours! eek!). I do whole-heartedly believe that bonding and attachment can START that quickly for some folks, but it certainly takes a lot to really start weaving the parent-child bonds. I think a lot of people confuse quick adjustment with quick attachment. Many kids don't scream in horror upon seeing their new parents, but that certainly doesn't mean they instantly love and trust them either.

Great, great post. And good encouragement for me, as I realized just yesterday that we are not yet "there" with Zeeb... and then I read your post and realize maybe there is no "there" exactly... just a continual process, a journey, and each day we are one step closer to each other. (until the time when he needs to pull away! oh the irony of being a parent!) Thanks Nicki, for sharing your wisdom. You are a wonderful mom.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful insight! It was very helpful. I am so grateful to have amazing women who have BTDT to help me learn about all things adoption. Posts like this are so much better than any book I read!

You amaze me Nicki! Thank you so much for sharing this. It is so easy to put your blinders on and pretend like everything is perfect, only to realize one day that something has gone totally astray. But the very best thing about adoptive parenting is the moment when you realize your blinders are gone, and what you are witnessing is real. Your child loves you and you love him/her more than anything in this world.

I am so glad that I found this post. I hope you don't mind, but I printed it out and am taking it with us to the IMPACT class on Saturday. It is our first adoption class at Bethany Christian Services (I went through all of them while my husband was deployed and we lived in Washington State). You answered so many of my questions in this post and calmed my fears. Not only was your post well-written and a delight to read -- but it was honest and REAL. Bless you for being so willing to share about a topic which is rarely discussed in such a way.

You are wonderful!

Blessings!
