Silhouettes

Friday, January 11th, 2008

Forever ago I started this Silhouette project. I got as far as cutting out all the individual heads of my four children and stalled out or shifted into another mode, as I so often do mid-project. I think there’s a New Year resolution about this very thing somewhere on my blog. So I finally pulled out the old project and finished it up. So silly because the remaining steps took a total of about 45 minutes. Dumb that I waited six months to do it!

Silhouette - Teegan

The results turned out really nice and the kids think they are cool. The funniest part is to see how different each child’s silhouette looks compared to now. Three kids have way more hair and one has much less! I got these cool double-paned frames so I put the silhouette in between two frames of glass and the background paper behind it so I can easily swap out the background or the silhouette separately if I want to update them in the future.

It is fun to compare the kids’ profiles. Shocking to see how similar Addison and Teegan look and how Dalton and Noah share so many similar features as well. These are details lost in the 3D!

I decided to hang them in a straight line to go with the sort of minimalist feeling I’m going for in our family room. I like how they turned out. Credit and instructions: Under Construction

Last minute crafts with kids

In the last few days we made some paper ornaments and 3D snowflakes. They all turned out really cute and I think the kids had fun doing them as well. If you have some paper, tape, glue, staples laying around, you have the stuff needed for these projects:

Project #1: Paper Ornaments

The full directions for making these are here. All you need is paper, scissors (or a 1.5″ circle punch) and some glue (we used a glue stick). That’s it!

Project #2: 3D Snowflakes

We had some Christmas-themed origami paper sitting around but I’d like to have the kids make a few more with plain white paper. The multi-colors are a bit throw-upish for my taste! haha. But I love how they turned out. They are HUGE. We hung a bunch from the ceiling in a corner.

You can get the full instructions for how to make these here. All you need is some paper (white!! haha), tape and staples along with scissors.

Project #3: another kind of modern paper ornament. We haven’t made these yet so no original pictures but this is what they will look like when we’re done:
